Veteran Mentors is a 9 day Junior Leadership Program that has been running for almost 4 years for 12 – 17 year olds lead by ex-army veterans.
Customer Service Liaison, Lynette, explains the program gives teens a break from family, friends and any technical devices (i.e phones).
“Teaching kids old school values and as the days go on we do seminars based on everything 12 – 17 years old are struggling with and going through,” she said.
From 6am until 9pm the activities can include hiking and team building exercises.
“There’s rafting or we’ll do kayaking, abseiling we go out and do a high ropes course and ultimately if the wind is good we’ll go out and do a tandem sky dive as well,”
They are also taught resilience, honour, integrity as well as army drills which they present to their parents in a graduation ceremony at the end of the program.
Lynette says the program is able to change their lives for the better.
“They feel so good about themselves and so we send them home with a lot of self confidence, a lot of belief in who they are,” she said.
Veteran Mentors runs through the school holidays with the next program to start on June 26th.
