Palm Beach Currumbin State High School have partnered with Gecko Environment Council to start a Community Organic Waste Initiative.

Tom Pasley from Palm Beach Currumbin State High School explains the idea started from a sustainability program to reduce food waste at the school.

“We got a composting machine in order to reduce the food waste that is generated by the school and we decided to expand that to the community as well” he said.

The bins are set up at Gecko House and transported by volunteers from the Southern Beaches who will use the mulch created by the composting machine for their gardens.

“The machine we use has a capacity of 100kgs a day so we could be processing a lot of food waste from the school and also from the community” Tom said.

The composting machine uses heat and bacteria to break down food scrapes and reduces it by 80-90% in volume.

The bins are labelled and can have all sorts of food waste that would not usually be able to be composted. Items such as; citrus peels, meat, prawn shells, pasta, fish, chicken, dairy products and bread.

“If it’s a food scrap of any description… it can go into this bin” Tom said.

The food waste bins were kindly purchased and donated by Councillor Gail O’Neill.

If you would like to contribute to the Community Organic Waste Project head to the Gecko Environmental House at 139 Duringan Street in Currubin.
